Dr. Maya Castillo, DDS — owner, dentist, Hill Road kid
The office Dr. Castillo wished existed. So she built it.
Maya Castillo grew up off Hill Road, close enough to the foothills that her mother's standing threat was 'clean your room or no Camel's Back.' She was also, by her own cheerful admission, a terrible dental patient — a canceler, a white-knuckler, a kid who once hid in the car. Not because anything hurt, exactly. Because nobody ever told her what was about to happen, and because every visit came with a sermon about flossing delivered to a nine-year-old like a parole hearing.
She left for Creighton for dental school and a residency that took her through community clinics where she treated patients who'd avoided the dentist for ten, twenty, thirty years. Almost none of them were lazy about their health. They were scared, or they'd been burned by a surprise bill, or they'd been shamed once and decided never again. The problem wasn't the patients, she realized. It was the rooms they were being asked to walk into.
So in 2018 she came home to Boise and built a different room. Ceiling TVs, because staring at a drop ceiling is nobody's happy place. Noise-canceling headphones, because the sound bothers people more than anything else. Numbing before everything, explained before it happens, always. Prices printed on paper before treatment, because 'we'll see what insurance says' is not a price. And a strict, staff-wide, no-exceptions ban on guilt trips — the flossing lecture died in this building in 2018 and no one has mourned it.
Her sister Ana runs the front desk and, unofficially, the whole operation. Patients know them both by name; a good number knew their parents. That's the quiet advantage of being locally owned instead of a chain: the Castillos can't hide behind a brand, and they've never wanted to. If your crown fails, the person who warrantied it will see you at the farmers market. Around here, that's better than any corporate guarantee.
